Once a year, right as Comic-Con takes over San Diego, we churn one run of the most heroic flavor in our freezer. Then it's gone until next summer. No encore, no second batch, no "we found one more tub in the back."
This Thursday, July 23, Superman lands at both shops.
What exactly is Superman?
A Michigan classic, created by the Stroh's Brewery during prohibition. This fun ice cream is a combination of Blue Moon, a lemon and light vanilla ice cream, and a cherry cream soda flavor to make the classic color combo.
If you grew up in Michigan like Chris did, you don't need the explanation — you're probably already grabbing your keys. For everyone else: picture red, yellow, and blue swirled into one scoop, with each color pulling its weight. Blue Moon (yes, the same one that lives on our always menu), a bright cherry cream soda, and a mellow lemon vanilla. It tastes like a Midwest summer, which we mean as the highest possible compliment.
The rules of the drop
We make it once. One batch, split between North City and Torrey Highlands. When the tubs are empty, Superman flies home until next year.
You can get it by the scoop or take a pint home — in the shop or through online ordering. If you're in town for Comic-Con and need a break from the convention floor, we'd argue a scoop of Superman is the most on-theme recovery snack in San Diego.
Check the current flavors page before you make the drive — we'll keep it updated as tubs run low.
