Dirty Sodas in San Marcos.

Café-style sodas — pick from this month's lineup or build your own. A Utah idea, made our way in San Marcos.

Or build your own

Three steps, your own creation.

Don't see what you're after on the menu? Build it. Soda + syrup + cream — that's it.

Step one

Pick your base

Choose from 8 soda options on the fountain — including diet and zero-sugar versions. Ask your scooper what's currently on tap.

Sodas rotate occasionally based on what's available from our distributor.

Step two

Add up to six pumps of syrup

A rotating set of flavored syrups — vanilla, fruit, spice, citrus, sometimes more adventurous things. The list shifts every quarter.

One or two syrups in a dirty soda is usually the sweet spot. Three if you're feeling brave.

Step three

Pick your cream

Fresh made cold foams. Choose dairy or our dairy-free oat cream — same shop, same care, swap straight across.

Want a scoop of ice cream on top instead of cream? Ask to float it — best of both.

Origin story

So what is a dirty soda?

Dirty sodas started in Utah. Specifically, Provo. Specifically, a generation of LDS college students who didn't drink coffee and decided sodas with syrups and cream were close enough to a treat. Swig opened in 2010, Sodalicious followed, and by 2017 the drinks had a name and a national following.

What started as fountain soda with extras got prettier pretty quickly. Real syrups. Hand-whipped cream. Naming the drinks like they were cocktails. It's not new — soda fountains in the 1920s were doing roughly this — but the modern format is a Utah thing, and it deserves credit.

We added dirty sodas to the menu at our San Marcos shop because we love the whole concept. They've been on the menu year-round ever since — with the lineup rotating every quarter to keep things interesting.

Common questions

Dirty sodas, answered.

What is a dirty soda?

A dirty soda is a café-style drink built from three parts: a fountain soda base (like Dr Pepper or Sprite), a flavored syrup (often fruit, vanilla, or something more adventurous), and a cream finish on top. The format originated in Provo, Utah around 2010 and has spread west. Most dirty sodas are served over ice in a tall cup with a domed lid.

Where can I get dirty sodas in San Marcos?

Our San Marcos scoop shop at 250 North City Drive, Suite 7 serves dirty sodas year-round. We rotate the named menu every quarter and offer a build-your-own option. We're open Sun–Thu until 10pm, Fri–Sat until 11pm.

Do you have dirty sodas in San Diego?

Right now dirty sodas are only at our San Marcos location — but San Marcos is about a 25-minute drive from most of north San Diego, and worth the trip. We may add dirty sodas to our Torrey Highlands shop in the future; if we do, we'll update this page.

Do you have dairy-free dirty sodas?

Yes — every dirty soda can be made dairy-free by swapping the cream for our oat cream. Just ask your scooper. There's no separate dairy-free menu; everything's available either way at no upcharge.

What's in a Wynston's dirty soda?

Each drink is built from a fountain soda base + flavored syrups + a cream finish. The current named drinks are listed on this page (pulled live from our shop menu). You can also build your own — pick any soda, add up to six pumps of any syrup we have on rotation, and choose your cream.

Can I order dirty sodas to go?

Yes — order ahead through our Toast pickup link or walk in. You can also order on DoorDash or UberEats. We'll pack them up safe and sound or have them ready for you to pick up.

Do you ship dirty sodas?

No — dirty sodas are built fresh and need to be enjoyed within an hour or two. We do ship ice cream nationwide, but the sodas are an in-shop-only experience.

Can I add a scoop of ice cream to my dirty soda?

Yes — ask to float it. A scoop of our handcrafted Old Reliable ice cream on top of any dirty soda.
